River House, Boyce, Virginia
THE RIVER HOUSE has held a strategic position in Shenadoah River life since 1780. Here, where the river runs parallel to the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, commerce and history thrived. The property, belonging to the huge Carter Hall estate, served variously as slave quarters, the prosperous ferryman's house, Civil War hospital hospital, way-station, restaurant and tavern. Historically known as the FERRY FARM, it has earned listing in the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places.
True to its tradition of hospitality, THE RIVER HOUSE became a Bed&Breakfast in 1985, serving a steady flow of historians and geneologists, antique hunters, hikers, bicyclists, and wine tasters. They gather for convivial brunches, and while omelets and waffles are cooked to order tableside, interesting discoveries and experiences are shared. Those participating in ENTER LAUGHING -- A WEEKEND IN THE COUNTRY, two-night "houseparty" packages which are programs especially designed for groups of friends and families, have additional pleasure appreciating their housemates' humorous interpretations for the comedy readings, and sleuthing abilities for the murder mysteries. The house lends itself comfortably to similar houseparties, family reunions, or small workshops, and arrangements can be made for specific seminars. AAA, Mobil, BBAV approved.
